UDEMY: New year resolution- bring your career to the next level by learning something new

New year, new resolutions...among them most of us will put a *learning ...(fill in the blank with your favourite topic). Especially as self-employed professional developmente becomes the key to thrive in your business and serve your clients in the best possible ways.

My resolution for this year is to learn Portuguese and brush up my French - plus a number of other skills to learn and hone (sales and marketing among them), but these two languages are the learning priority.

What about you? What are you going to learn? And how?

Nowadays, there's a host of resouces available for any taste and pocket - online and offline.
I love learning in general and always do it, either reading or attending webinars and online courses. The web is full of the so-called MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and one of my favourite learning portals, alongside with Coursera, is Udemy.

I know some of you still did not get a present for your best friend who is a translator...you went crazy rummaging through bookshops looking for the best gift ideas but nothing really inspired you! Here are few simple ideas that will help you make the perfect present for your dear translator.

Assistenti di lingua italiana all'estero 2016/2017

Vi siete laureati alla magistrale poco più di un anno fa (almeno il 1° gennaio 2015), avete studiato una lingua tra inglese, francese, spagnolo e tedesco, e avete meno di 30 anni?

Avete voglia di viaggiare e mettervi alla prova lavorando in un altro Paese europeo?

Questo è il momento giusto per fare il grande salto e mandare la vostra domanda al M.I.U.R. in occasione del bando annuale per Assistenti di lingua italiana all'estero per l'anno scolastico 2016/2017.

Traduttori registrati presso la Camera di Commercio - Bari

Ti sei laureato/a in Traduzione/Interpretariato o forse già traduci/interpreti da anni...e cerchi un modo per metterti in contatto con il mercato locale. Come fare?

Un'idea può essere quella di iscriversi al Ruolo dei periti e degli esperti della Camera di Commercio a te più vicina. Il vostro nome e i vostri contatti verranno resi pubblici in questo elenco (provate a cercare il mio nome).

E come si fa? Niente paura..tutto è possibile con un po' di pazienza (e qualche risparmio). Da qualche anno infatti io stessa sono iscritta presso la Camera di Commercio di Bari, in qualità di traduttrice ed interprete per l'inglese ed il neogreco. Più precisamente: sono iscritta al Ruolo dei periti e degli esperti - categoria XXII - sottocat.1 (con denominazione generale di lingue straniere).

Ecco a voi i passi da seguire.

Andiamo con ordine:
1. Compilate la domanda d'iscrizione al ruolo - ecco il modulo - la bella notizia è che una domanda può valere per un massimo di 3 iscrizioni a categorie simili: nel nostro caso quindi basta un modulo per l'iscrizione (e quindi per esaminati) per un massimo di 3 lingue.

2. Allegate copia della carta d'identità e del vostro codice fiscale, valido, copia di tutti quei certificati, attestazioni, documenti che provano le vostre conoscenze linguistiche (es. certificato di laurea, certificazioni linguistiche, corsi vari). Cliccando

dalla C.C.I.A.A. per l'iscrizione a qualsiasi ruolo.

3. Quanto costa l'esame?
Per presentare la domanda, sarete tenuti a versare:

• 16,00 €  marca da bollo;
• 31,00 € diritti di segreteria da pagare al momento della domanda.

Se dovessero chiamarvi a sostenere un colloquio integrativo per testare le vostre conoscenze, dovrete versare ulteriori 46,00 € a fronte del quale potrete sostenere il colloquio;

4. Consegnate all'ufficio competente (1° piano - ma meglio chiedere in portineria) tutti i documenti di cui sopra - modulo compilato, carta d'identità, certificati etc., marca da bollo, attestazione di pagamento.

5. Abbiate un po' di pazienza...prima o poi vi faranno sapere se bastano i certificati vari o dovrete sostenere l' "esamino" . La comunicazione vi verrà inviata a casa con la convocazione della data di esame - potrebbero anche avvisarvi telefonicamente (in entrambi i casi circa una decina di giorni prima dell'esame).

L'inglese...mai stato così "easy"

L’estate è agli sgoccioli e tutti torniamo a lavoro o a scuola…e ancora resta in sospeso quella difficile missione che continuiamo a rimandare: migliorare o rinfrescare il nostro INGLESE. Non troviamo mai il momento giusto per farlo…

Non sarebbe stupendo se aveste la possibilità di migliorare l'inglese mentre ve ne state rilassati sul divano senza ripassare la grammatica o complicarsi la vita consultando un dizionario a ogni piè sospinto? Non sarebbe fantastico riuscire a capire gli inglese facendo abituare il nostro orecchio all’accento madrelingua senza troppi traumi? E che ne dite di arricchire il lessico di "phrasal verbs" e espressioni idiomatiche ma senza annoiarsi con liste e liste di parole?

Bab.la or "Be bop a lula": love languages!

There's one place online whose aim is to have (almost) everything you need when you have to do with languages. The website is Bab.la. It is very articulate, full of contents and activities and seem to have a wide audience in mind, from beginners language learners to language professionals: you could literally spend hours just exploring it and discovering what it has to offer...

Lets' start with language professionals and/or language bloggers. If you belong to any of these categories you might know Bab.la thanks to a popular competition it has been running for a few years now: web readers nominate the top language lovers blog, learning blogs, professional blogs, Facebook pages and Twitterers...of course all about languages!
Bab.la itself manages an interesting blog...about languages, travels and internship opportunities abroad. The blog title? Just, lovely...Lexiophiles!
If you have your own blog/website you can also embed a dictionary, a quiz plugin or install a browser toolbar with the dictionary.
Bab.la olso offers professional human translations - all you need to do is to upload the document you want to be translated, in order to have a price quote.

Visual dictionary

Love overwhelmed me today as I was working on a very technical translation...love not only for my job, but also for this extremely precious tool: the Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary. It is just perfect for you, technical translator who is going crazy, spending hours to understand what that specific term refers to and also for you interpreter, who is preparing for an assignment. Unless you are an engineer or a scientist, some words may have no sense to your eyes. Seeing things rather than learning plain words is way more effective.
And searching for pictures on Google might not proof enough sometimes...and there it is: the visual dictionary. Of course there is a hard copy version - but the online one is very handy!

Memrise - Water the garden of your memory

Yeah, we know: learning is a life-learning process...but...does it have to be done in the same old way as we did when we were in school? Fortunately, new technologies (I would say amazing web designers and IT engineers) help us learn, discover something new and improve ourselves by creating amazing websites and apps.
Today, I want to talk about Memrise. The motto on its home page says it all: Learning, powered by imagination.

Learning can become fun and become a nice filler in our spare time during the day. We spend hours in front on our laptop or fiddling with our smart phone - why not learn something? Memrise offers you the chance to learn something in a gradual way - bit after bit. You read a word, you learn it, you learn a new one and then you are tested with different exercises and you collect your score! Next level: new words or concepts, other tests and the old words will be refreshed to your memory again at some point. And so on and so forth...you could spend hours learning, listening, repeating and playing, gradually growing the garden of your memory!

Dizione italiana

Ce l'ho fatta! Finalmente ritrovo l'entusiasmo e l'energia per scriver un nuovo post su mio amato Glottovolante!

Fino ad ora ho solo parlato di lingue straniere e viaggi all'estero, ma mai come in questi ultimi mesi sono stata così concentrata sulla mia lingua madre: l'ITALIANO. Ora che sto completando la mia formazione come interprete c'è un aspetto che urge essere maggiormente curato (non è mai troppo tardi, per fortuna): la dizione. È vero spesso ho storto il naso in passato...all'idea di omogeneizzare la lingua, di "spersonalizzarla" e "delocalizzarla".

The Pimsleur Method

The Pimsleur Method is a nice and interactive way to rapidly learn the essential vocabulary of a language in order to communicate effectively in real situations within a short time! According to a number of studies and statistical data...knowing ONLY 500 words of a language...we are able to understand averagely the 80% of what we read/hear...

The principle of "core vocabulary" is only one of the four on which the Pimsleur method is grounded, as invented by the linguist Paul Pimsleur. The other three are:

• graduated interval record: we memorize a word/an expression only when forced to recall it after a while;

BBC languages

BBC seems to me one of the best media companies covering a vast variety of topics in details. One of these is English language and foreign languages. Be it because native English speakers are not that famous for their aptitude to learn a foreign language, be it due to the multicultural environment which characterizes UK...BBC has an amazing section all dedicated to foreign language learning: http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/
There are few main languages with a complete basic course including grammar tips, vocabulary cards, word games, cultural features, videos, tests, excercises, idiomatic and slang expressions, resources about foreign media which can support your language learning. The privileged languages are:

Set a language to your keyboard

Being a former student of Greek language, the most frequent question I was asked is: how can you write Greek  on your computer? Easy!Adding a new language to your keybord toolbar...

Follow the steps below.

1. Open the Control Panel

2. From the right column of the opened window, go to International settings and time. Then select Change keyboards or other input methods.  

3. View the tab named Keyboards and languages and click on Change keyboards 

AIESEC - be the change

    Raise your hand if you've seen this logo somewhere around your Faculty...but never had the time or courage to approach one of their meetings to find what was that all about! I did the same for a loong time till I met them in person...and they're like us ;)

AIESEC is the largest student association in the world! It' about young people working for other young people to give them a chance...to change the world...and themselves. What they offer is an amazing amount of opportunities to make an internship in any continent of the world.

    If you're not older than 30, what you have to do is to approach the closest Aiesec office, have an interview with the local committee (LC). Once you've passed it you have to pay a little amount (definitely less than 300€) and you can register your profile on the immense database packed with internship opportunities from loads of countries. All you have to do at this point is to choose the best for you. 

• The GCDP, i.e. Global Community Development Program: volunteer program lasting for 6-8 weeks. It mainly intervenes in fields like sustainability, cross-cultural education, human rights, health, HIV and similar. In most cases you will be offered accommodation (sometimes even food and local transport).
• The GIP, the Global Internship Program is a real internship, usually in a business company. It can last from 6 to 12 months. In many cases even a minimum monthly allowance is granted to the intern so that he/she can cover evryday expenses. The fields covered are really unlimited...from Business managemente, to International trade to Foreign language teaching to Engineering and Marketing. It all depends of what qualification you have and which kind of experienc you want to do.

The spellchecker

First post in English and of 2012!!

It's about a very useful tool I'm using more and more, the spellchecker.

The name speaks for itself...what's the point of spellchecking? surely when you write emails in half an hour, translate thousands of words a day or write a document at work, you can proofread them dozens of times, yet there will be something dodging your glance or, in the worst case you won't even hav time to proofcheck properly. But... that little tiny typo could even compromise your career...

Quizlet - empowering your vocabulary

Which is the indispensable part of a language? the VOCABULARY!It does not matter how basic your grammar is...you just need few words...and you'll be safe (or into troubles)...

Quizlet offers its registered users an almost limitless series of flashcards. They are like virtual postcards meant to facilitate your learning y stimulating your visual memory. The section languages and vocabulary includes many languages.

E' aperto anche un altro bando per andare all'estero e fare un'esperienza di insegnamento di lingua italiana, come assistente di un altro docente.Questa volta il bando è quello pubblicato dal MIUR.
La scadenza per quest'anno è il 20 gennaio 2012.

Partire nel 2012 - Assistentato Comenius

Sognate di fare l'insegnante? (di qualsiasi materia, non importa quale).
La DG Istruzione e Cultura dell'Unione Europea gestisce il progetto di mobilità internazionale Comenius, che coinvolge insegnanti, futuri docenti, alunni e scuole, invitandoli a spostarsi, a vivere un periodo all'estero nel corso dell'anno scolastico. L'iniziativa più interessante per noi giovani a caccia di futuro è certamente quella dell'assistentato, simile all'assistentato MIUR (v.il mio post dello scorso dicembre).

Che cos'è
E' un periodo di lavoro - insegnamento- all'estero che può durare dalle 13 alle 45 settimane, presso una scuola ospitante.E' rivolto ai futuri insegnanti di qualsiasi disciplina, per permettere non solo di fare un'esperienza professionale formativa, ma anche di vivere in un contesto inter- e multi-culturale, apportando ad alunni e colleghi la ricchezza del proprio patrimonio e background culturale e arricchendosi lui/lei stesso/a di nuove conoscenze empiriche.

Le attività previste, infatti, vanno dal supporto didattico al docente della materia di interesse, alla creazione di workshop culturali, lezioni della propria lingua madre e di altre lingue, rafforzare le iniziative a livello europeo. Per ulteriori dettagli sulle attività vedi qui.

Dove 
Aderiscono al progetto tutti i 27 membri dell'Unione Europea + la Turchia (candidatasi per diventare membro) + Islanda, Liechtenstein, Norvegia (Spazio Economico Europeo) + Svizzera e Croazia dal 2011.
Nel modulo di candidatura si possono esprimere fino a 6 preferenze per il Paese ospitante - o in alternativa non indicare alcun Paese, affidandosi al caso.

Il traduttore

Il traslatore...quello che "sposta tutti i significati da una lingua/cultura di partenza ad una lingua/cultura di arrivo". Non mi dilungo sulla definizione di traduttore (ed anche di interprete) perché là fuori c'è una ricchissima bibliografia che cerca di descrivere, problematizzare, contestualizzare, teorizzare...la figura del traduttori. E noi studenti di traduzione?? Ci sorbiamo e ri-sorbiamo sempre le stesse storie...ma a livello pratico...come possiamo iniziare, non dico a lavorare seriamente, ma almeno a far i primi passi..nel settore in questione??Grazie alla rete.Grazie ai forum, alle piattaforme, ai siti internet per traduttori.

E' il più grande database mondiale (dico...mondiale!!) di fornitori di servizi di traduzione....Che però offre molto di più di una serie di contatti!
Cosa offre proz.?? Tanto, tanto, tanto!! Iniziamo pian piano....
Prima di tutto, vi faccio notare che a molti dei servizi e materiali messi a disposizione da proz è possibile accedere anche non essendo registrati. E' possibile registrarsi (anche con un account base, gratis) in qualità di:
- traduttore o interprete freelance;
- agenzia di traduzione;
- freelancer o outsourcer;
- studente di traduzione (eccociiii!!! qualcuno ci pensa ;-);
